The museum of my life…

This is clearly my approach to throwing…

Yesterday evening my mother and I had a comical skype call!  My parents own a flat in London where I lived before moving to Dubai…as a result a lot of my things have ended up in storage there.  These are of course things I felt I would ‘need’ in the future and of course winter clothes that are too heavy for here but that I do actually need for when I visit London and Berlin (or indeed anywhere else that has actual winters!)  My mother decided that she wanted to ‘clear’ the storage area which of course meant going through my possessions…

She was quite zealously keen to do this because my mother LOVES to throw things away.  I am quite the opposite and am a hoarder.  When I moved I even had to have my best friend come over to actually force me to throw things away.  She is as ruthless as my mother.

In spite of said ruthless friend it transpired there were boxes and boxes of things to debate, it seems I even kept all my tights!  Clearly I wanted to be prepared for any eventuality for my visits…you just never know when you might have to be cute at a cocktail party or warm while walking around (best avoided I learned on my last visit!)

My mother held nothing back in her judgement of my fashion choices, it was pretty funny to see certain items through her eyes.  In just over an hour we culled my wardrobe and divided the rest into piles for London, Berlin and Dubai so I can be well dressed internationally (that makes me sound so much more jet set than I actually am!) The greatest achievement of all may be that we managed not to have one single disagreement – no mean feat given how precious I can be about my things!

The great thing is that this was a job that desperately needed to be done and now I don’t have to do it on my stop over in London at Christmas.  So I am VERY grateful to my mother for tackling this!  THANK YOU MUMMY!!

Hah! Probably. Although I have a box of stuff from her first year that is FULL of stuff she will never want 🙂 Also, do you have a blog name you use, like Bond?
I am about to tag you in a post and I was going to call you Wide (from Wide Ranging Ramblings) but thought that might be offensive. Hehe.

Ah you’re a lovely sentimental type like me! I don’t have a blog name…I feel like I should have one now…I guess I can go with Gigi which is a nickname I had way back in the day within my family – does that suit for your purposes? How excited to be tagged! xx

Chuck it all out! 😉 I’m always sneaking the kids stuff in the bin when they aren’t looking. Don’t tell Tara I said that, we’ll tell her I recycle it all! 😉
I would love to have been a fly on the wall for your little parental exchange

Ah well Tara can be pleased with me, we gave anything good to my cousins wife and a load is left to give to various friends on my return! The only stuff that was binned really was beyond salvaging (although my mother is quite creative…!) It turns out that I have become a lot more grown up, as a teenager this was the cause of EPIC rows!

Phew I wouldn’t let my mum anywhere near my clothes!! Mine all look like rags, but at least 2 of my t-shirts are worth £200 + (I didn’t pay that don’t worry) because they are a bit of a rarity now. I even have a few stashed in the loft now that are absolutely covered in holes, but they are my faves 🙂
Well Gigi 😀 I need an email address to send you your new header/logo, it’s all ready, though once it’s up I’ll have a look at it and may tweak it some more! I’m msg.mother.mands ‘AT’ gmail.com

My cousin’s wife seems to have done quite well so at least it’s not gone to total waste! Which T-shirts are now worth 200 pounds?? I am not sure I have ever bought anything that accrued value! I have some really scabby old stuff that my mother tried to throw but in the end she kept it all for me, it’s stuff that I want here eventually. I will send you an email with my address in it! How exciting!! xx

A couple of my metal t-shirts (actually I probably have about 5 or 6 t-shirts that are quite rare originals) have fetched those kinds of amounts online, it all depends on if people are stupid enough to pay that, but I know they have in the past! Some of my vinyl is worth a fortune…I should really make more of an issue in the house insurance. One mini-album I own has previously fetched £600, some people have more money than sense, just buy a reissue! I will admit I’ve been looking on Discogs and there is quite a few old demo tapes I have my eye on, but they’re no where near that expensive!
Most of my stuff has sentimental value and I’d never get rid of it anyway, I wish I’d of kept more! 🙂 x

Ah yes those are collectibles, there seems to be a big market for these! It’s hard to part with those sort of things though, there’s a reason they have value! You should for sure check your insurance covers you or see if you can get storage for them that’s fire and water proof. it would be such a shame to lose them! I have been amazed with what I have hoarded recently…going through my life to throw it away it amazes me what has made it through various culls…

If the house is ever on fire I’m throwing Tom, Mac, Robyn’s Memory box and my vinyl out the window 🙂 There the only things I’d really be bothered about saving. Though I may buy a portable hard drive to back up periodically with all out photos! 😉
It can be quite liberating throwing out old stuff…I might head up the loft later 😉

It’s funny isn’t it the amount of stuff we have but most of it we could so easily do without so long as the people and memories are saved! A portable harddrive is a great investment – I love mine! Did you brave the loft? xx
